I love my job

Story #1:

Like I do pretty much everyday, I was eating lunch with the rest of the residents in the dining room. Cassie, a resident, came over and waited patiently. After a few moments she was noticed by someone at my table who said, "Hi. Did you need something?" "I just haven't hugged my boy today." She leaned over and gave me a hug and kissed me on the forehead.

Story #2:

Jay is one of my favorites. She is on the hospitality committee and once a week spends a couple of hours at a desk near the front door. Her job is to push the button to open the door for any visitors. She never remembers my name and always just calls me "sweetie". As I passed through the lobby I said hello. She smiled, "Hi sweetie. Did you want a bag of popcorn? I have extra. Or you can have a bite." I didn't really want any popcorn, but I could tell it was one of those times where it wasn't about the popcorn and more about her being able to offer me something. "I'll take a bite," I told her as I grabbed a few kernels out of her bag. She smiled and said, "No charge. Have a good day sweetie."

Story #3:

I was in my office when one of my neighbors walked by. She was lingering in my doorway so I greeted her and asked if there was something I could do for her. "I don't know. You look kind of busy." "I kind of am, but go ahead and tell me what you need and I'll tell you if I can help you." It turned out it was something really easy. She has limited vision and just needed me to explain something on a form that she had received in the mail. It took me 30 seconds and she was on her way out the door again. As she was leaving she turned around and said, "I love you, Shaun."

How could I not love my job? They hug and kiss me, offer me popcorn, and tell me they love me. Where else could I feel so appreciated?

I've never seen someone love their job as much as you do. It's quite refreshing actually. Particularly since so many people are afraid of or hate working with the elderly. We need a lot more of you around! I hope I get one like you when I'm old :)

I think the only other place where they treat you like this is kindergarten. Oh, and teaching sunbeams. I felt this same way about my BYUI students. They'd stop by to talk about dating, choosing a major, adjusting to college, deweirding after the mission, and other stuff. I miss all that feel-good stuff.

That's so cute. Your residents sound so cute. Although it's my job to make my clients feel special and not their job to make me feel special, I sometimes wish I got to feel that special and loved in my job!
